RYA Short Range Course (SRC) Training
A one day course. Prior to the start, you will be required to complete a home study course lasting approximatley four hours from a supplied book.
Minimum age 16.
The course covers the operation of both
- Fixed VHF radios
- Hand held VHF radios
Including those with Digital Selective Calling (DSC) and the associated equipment required commercially.
The Short Range Certificate is the minimum qualification required by law.
The syllabus and course content is decided by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and agreed by the Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA) who ask the (RYA) to administrate the course.
A radio is an important piece of safety equipment on board and it is vital to understand the correct procedures.
The aim of the course is an understanding of:
- VHF Radio under the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS).
- VHF procedures
- Digital Selective Calling (DSC)
This certificate has replaced the old VHF Restricted Licence and is the qualification required to operate VHF and VHF / DSC radios. Passport size photograph is required prior the start of the course.
There is a £60 license fee payable to the RYA.
Please be aware this is a Pass/Fail Course to re sit the exam is an initial £45 charge - this is unusual in the RYA and shows the importance of this qualifications.
